Team Durango 1-2 @ Northern Nationals, Michigan

Filed under: News — Stuart @ 7:23 pm

This past weekend saw the third annual running of the ‘Northern Nationals in Hudsonville, Michigan – at ‘Proving Grounds Raceway’. Travis Amezcua and Carson Wernimont made the long trip up to the event to put their Team Durango drives to the test, against some stiff competition, including the current World Champion Ryan Cavalieri.  Friday was practice and the track was becoming really high-bite as the cars began to lay down some rubber.

proving-grounds Qualifying started and the organisers allowed the track to dry out – and as a consequence the grip levels dropped way down.  Carson had been trying his DEX210 2WD buggy in mid-motor 4-gear (MM4) configuration during practice but now the traction was lower it wasn’t working for him and forced a switch back to a more traditional (for clay tracks) rear motor 3-gear (RM3) setup – something the DEX210 was designed to do.

After qualifying was over the Durango duo were sat in an impressive 1st and 2nd on the grid for the 4WD main, with Travis beating Carson for the TQ spot. In 2WD modified buggy it was Travis who took the fight to the reigning world champion, and sat 2nd on the grid behind Cavalieri with his DEX210, whilst Carson sat 2nd on the grid for the 4WD SC finals.

4WD Buggy
Travis and Carson went off in qualifying order in the first two mains – Travis taking both opening legs for the title whilst Carson took the third leg for second overall.

2WD Buggy
The first main went well for Travis as he hung tight to second.  Carson didn’t have a good run as he was still getting to grips with the car and the setup wasn’t quite there.  In leg two Carson improved to 5th but whilst Travis was having another great run – a small error getting hung up on a pipe dropped him out of contention and another win from Cavalieri meant he took the title.  Leg three and Carson went off – feeling the setup changes he’d made to his DEX210 take full effect he stormed from 6th to 1st in one lap and went on to take the leg. Carson and Travis finished a respectable 4th & 5th respectively – not bad for the new car on the block!

4WD Pro SC
Carson took 2nd in the opening two legs before taking the win in leg three – his DESC410R feeling pretty dialled and giving him 2nd overall for the race.

It was a great meeting for the Team Durango racers – learning their cars and putting in some fantastic results with all their rides.
