Brake Animation

Brake setup on the DNX408 is critical and the best way to achieve this is to take time and shim things properly.   Early DNX408’s didn’t come with shims included, and with no shimming, the pistons need to move too far for proper braking.

The ideal setting is to have between 0.5mm and 1mm of clearance between the brake discs and pads in total – so the piston will move the inner plate 0.5-1mm against the brake disc to clamp it against the opposing plate.

dnx408-brakeshim-11xIt’s best to leave out threadlock until the correct shim setting has been decided as you may find it necessary to assemble / reassemble several times to find a setting that works for you. The screws which the brake pads sit upon have a shoulder that stops them being inserted enough for proper brake clearance.
You’ll need some shims with a 3mm internal diameter to fit over the brake screws. Remember the setting you’re looking for is around 0.5mm to 1mm – less than 0.5 and the brakes might bind up, more than 1mm and you might not get full braking force.

Try using a couple of shims to begin with and adjust if needed to suit. Using the shims shown above, I found two to be on the limit, with possibly a little too much movement in the brake pad so I tried again with three which felt a lot better. For fine-tuning you can use thinner shims to get the desired setting.

When you’ve found the setting you want – make sure to use threadlock to ensure the screws don’t back out; this will make sure your new setting is maintained.

Once you’ve set the pads, adjusting the brake bias by shortening / lengthening the small link turnbuckle that goes between the front and rear brake arms. Adjusting this link on the car can easily pop it off if the threads are too tight – which will certainly lead to frustration as it’s a difficult place to reach for reattaching the link, with the side guard obscuring the view somewhat.

To make sure the link can be adjusted without popping off, it’s advisable to use some grease when building the joins and then running the turnbuckle fully in and out several times to free things up. Once the joint has been ‘broken in’ correctly it shouldn’t fall-off whilst adjusting.
